persist backup.py logs

backup.py logs aren't persisted anywhere; they're only available in the failed/successful jobs.

It would be useful to persist these logs to storage (potentially remote store or local volume)

For supporting logs in remote stores, it might be worth rewriting backup in golang, for access to the tools repo.
