configurable strategy for db store

We've got two, but the one we use is hard-coded. I just found out that the other one doesn't work. I'm doing some updates, but we'd ideally have this be configurable (and have a test with it).

The huge advantage is that you can set the dbname to :memory: and run the entire "persistence" thing in RAM.
