FTS - Query supervisor duplicate the query accounting on every node

    Description

      The slow query monitoring feature is tracking the search queries on every node with different IDs specific to that node.

      This won't help in managing the query at a cluster level.

      We can better this by tracking it only on the query coordinating node. 

      A UI could always hit the endpoint on all the cluster nodes and aggregate the results in the UI.

      It could also track the associated server node with each result now (under display) so that it

      can issue the cancel request to the correct coordinating node.

          Thejas Orkombu I did obeserve maxClauseCount error. So i had set it high value and hence query ran for 9s (look at my previous comment). In this 9s, i tried check across all nodes but i saw only on 172.23.97.212

          Girish Benakappa, this is the expected output since the query supervisor was modified recently to scatter gather for the active queries that are running in the system (which are entered in the query supervisor maps). So, when the rest endpoint is hit against any fts node, it's now going to perform a scatter gather operation, collect the query supervisor maps' entries from all the fts nodes, collapse them in a single supervisor map and provide it as a response back to the user on the node where the endpoint was hit. The outputs seen here basically correspond to the same query entry(there are no duplicate query entries now) scatter gathered from the coordinator node's(with the UUID "a5d7c8c882b8259cacb89184f424c5b2") query map entries, because this ticket's fix made sure that the queries are registered only on the coordinator node's query supervisor map.

          Also, if you check the stats object in the response it says total = 3, this means that in total 3 fts nodes are supposed to participate in the scatter gather operation to fetch the active queries running in the entire system and it also says successful = 3 meaning that all the three nodes returned a response successfully. Another thing to note is that the totalActiveQueryCount is 1 meaning there is only one active query entry in all of the nodes' query supervisor maps, so there are no duplicate entries in the system.

          When builds older than 7.1.0-1758 are used, the duplicate entries in the query supervisor can be observed. Here are the steps involved in verifying the same:

          1. Create an fts cluster, for example 3 nodes, using a build older than 7.1.0-1758. 
          2. Create an fts index over a travel-sample bucket. Keep the partition count more than the number of nodes to verify the effect more clearly, since the nodes that don’t have a partition won’t forwarded the query and it would never register the same, and also keeping track of such nodes can be avoided.
          3. Run a slow running query which takes enough time to verify the bug. Taking the wildcard query here:

          Note that each node’s local query supervisor has an entry for the same query. This introduces duplicate entries in the cluster and also makes it hard to distinguish where the query was deployed (which is coordinator for the query), only using these response objects. Hence, the fix aims to resolve this redundancy by making sure that only the coordinator makes an entry for the query in its local query supervisor.

          ======

          The fix was used to improve the query supervisor functionality, DOC-9693, which aimed to get the active queries running (or rather the queries hit on the coordinator which are still running) from any node in the cluster contrary to its predecessor. So, the node on which /api/query was hit is going to perform a scatter gather to all fts nodes to get the query supervisor details and then merge the responses. A point to note is that, the parameter “totalActiveQueryCount” talks about many non-forwarded (i.e. not considering the forwarded queries during scatter gather) queries running in the system. To see the effect

          1. Create a 3 node fts cluster using the latest build.
          2. Create an fts index over a travel-sample bucket with partition count greater than the number of nodes.
          3. Run a slow running query, for example the wildcard query mentioned above. Make sure the bleveMaxClauseCount is set to an appropriate value. 

          Hit the above /api/query endpoint on each node.

Also notice the stats object which has a “total” entry talking about the total number of fts nodes involved in the scatter gather to get the query supervisor details, “success” indicating which nodes returned an object with a success code and “fail” which shows how many nodes errored out, followed by “errors” which is a map of uuid and the errors recorded while scatter gathering on that node. So, in this case we see that all the nodes that participated in the scatter gather returned successfully, and also the totalActiveQueryCount = 1, meaning there is only one active query entry in all of the nodes' query supervisor maps, so there are no duplicate entries in the system.
