A fix would be to add post-installation validation check to see if ns_server is running (and listening on the right port), along with a better error message.

The problem is that we do not propagate status and errors to the Windows Service layer. So the user has no way of knowing if the service is running, errored etc. Further, we lose Windows' ability to restart a failed service as we don't report status. We need to fix this underlying problem.

Installer triggers erlsrv to register as window service. As result, we won't directly talk to Window Service Control Manager about any errors. On windows, you always go to Task Manager to manage/monitor any services. In fact, Task Manager will restart any failed service with specified times. We don't need to worry about it.

The bottom line about the problem is that antivirus will block certain tcp/ip ports, or services that open those ports.

This is already documented - http://docs.couchbase.com/couchbase-manual-2.5/cb-install/#microsoft-windows-installation

There is no way to detect (different) anti-virus software installed on machine consistently.
