Misleading error message when can't connect to Elasticsearch

Description

The error message "Elasticsearch connection failure, couldn't get version" isn't as helpful as it could be. Consider replacing "couldn't get version" with the exception message so the user will see something like "Connection refused", or remove it entirely.
