Amazon apparently requires signing all HTTP requests to the Elasticsearch cluster using AWS credentials. See https://docs.aws.amazon.com/elasticsearch-service/latest/developerguide/es-request-signing.html
This requirement is relaxed if you access the service through Amazon's API gateway, but that is not possible/ideal for some users.
