Indexer logging at debug level causes major performance regressions

I know that we don't plan on logging at debug level when we release in production, but I want to have a ticket open for changing the log level. It's also not clear to me whether or not our default production log level will be warn or info. This is important for performance tests and before this bug is closed this information needs to be communicated to the performance team.
