    Description

      The version of gRPC we use does not compile on Ubuntu 20.04 due to the newer version of glibc in that distro. It is anyway a fairly old version (1.12.0; the latest is 1.28.1); we should probably just try upgrading to the latest.

      One possible issue is that we originally build 1.17.0, but that had a crashing bug on MacOS (MB-33072); we downgraded to 1.12.0 which worked. We will need to verify that the latest build does not have this issue. Unfortunately the bug filed against gRPC was closed due to inactivity: https://github.com/grpc/grpc/issues/17807
