improve getCredentials() methods in REST API handling

Parsing the creds parameter is overly complicated and it requires creating 3 maps and ditching two, which is very wasteful and potentially heavy on the GC.
Luckily out tests don't use credentials, but if they did they would be heavily affected.
Have getCredentials just return auth.Credentials.
