View binary documents shows "There was an unexpected error" on the UI

Insert documnets vis mcsoda and json=0:
pytests/performance/mcsoda.py default@localhost json=1 max-creates=1000000 ratio-creates=1.0 ratio-sets=1 json=0

go to "data buckets"->Documents, select a random document shows "There was an unexpected error".

getting the same document via telnet shows:
