Find ways of keeping logs more relevant, perhaps compression?

    Description

One of the challenges we run into often in support is that when a customer has a problem, but the time we actually get logs from the systems, some or all of them have already rolled over and so the problem or context is lost.

This is especially true for stats information which can be incredibly useful, but typically only lasts a few days within the log files.

On easy proposal to help this would be to compress the log files as they are rolled over which would allow us to store much more history within the gigabyte of disk space that we enforce for ourselves.
